United Kingdom – local authorites
Councilors are members of a local government council, for example the city council. In the US, the title applied to a councilor is usually councilman or council woman. In the UK, the title is simply councilor.
In the UK, all local authorities are overseen by councilors which have been elected by local people. You must be at least 18 years old to apply for this position. People are usually elected as members of political parties, and once they’re elected, they officially represent their constituents (those living in the area where the councilor was elected).
There’s a certain skill set expected for a councilor. They’re expected to perform well under pressure and make decisions based on the majority request of their constituents as well as what is best in the long run.
Most councilors are not full time employees earning a wage. Although they will usually get paid a basic allowance and expenses. There are some who get paid a meagre wage for their full time commitment to the job.
